Show of Hands and guests stage special Haiti earthquake benefit gig

Show of Hands and fellow Devon musicians are to stage a unique gig in Exeter on Thursday 21 January to raise funds to help those affected by the devastating Haiti earthquake.

The brainchild of Devon-based Mick Burch, the gig at Exeter’s Phoenix Theatre will see Show of Hands’ Steve Knightley and Phil Beer joined by talented performers Jackie Oates and Jim Causley and young North Devon singer songwriter Jenna.

Says Mick: “It will bring together some of the West Country’s finest musicians – between them they are nominated for seven awards at next month’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. I was very lucky to find all of them available and able to offer their time.”

While Show of Hands are nominated for Best Original Song (Arrogance Ignorance and Greed) and Best Duo, Jackie Oates
– who triumphed as Best Newcomer last year – is up for three awards (Best Album, Best Traditional Track and Folk Singer of the Year). Jim Causley is frontman of the band Mawkin:Causley who are nominated for Best Group and Best Traditional Track.

Tickets, price £16, are now on sale from the theatre box office on (01392) 667080 www.exeterphoenix.org.uk/ Doors will open at 7.30pm for the 8pm gig.
